The focus of this year’s National Ag Ed In-service in Indianapolis was Agriculture Teacher Recruitment, Development, and Retention. During the national inservice we had time to work as a state and develop a plan for our state to recruit, develop, and retain teachers. One part of our plan is to conduct a workshop during State Convention for 10th and 11th grade FFA members.

This workshop will be an active, hands on workshop, conducted by J.D. Cant, Marlene Mensch, and Wes Crawford. The workshop will be held Monday at 1:00 pm during state convention.  We are asking you to select some good students that, in your judgment, can be successful at the University level. This is only an introduction to teaching agriculture, not a career selection process. We only want to open FFA Members eyes to the possibility of teaching agriculture.

We are currently retaining about 60% of our teachers after 5 years. This, in combination with our beginning teacher shortage, could send us into a serious downward spiral. I believe it is our obligation to do our part to make sure our chosen profession continues and grows.

Please encourage some of your best students to take part in the workshop!
